Nashua River Behind the Mills

This morning the New Hampshire Appalachian Mountain Club Paddlers kicked off their 2014 series of Trash Patrols on a section of the Nashua River behind the sprawling mills of Nashua, NH.   The patrols are organized by club member Denise and scheduled for the first Saturday of each month May through October.  With Denise recovering from very recent knee surgery and restricted to shore duty, her sister Sue served as today's patrol leader on the water.

Our flotilla of 8 kayaks and 1 canoe worked both shores of the river for several hours producing this varied haul...

Ron's canoe did most of the heavy lifting...

After having been sorted and counted, the trash was loaded into Don's trailer by the patrol's participants...

Following the event's conclusion I couldn't resist returning to the river for some further exploration.  I first headed downriver passing the Nashua Manufacturing Co. mill...

...and below the Main Street bridge, approached the Jackson Falls Dam...

After turning about and heading upriver towards the Mine Falls Dam I encountered this furry fellow...
...who warned of strong current up closer to Mine Falls and, sure enough, once past the footbridge in Mine Falls Park, my forward progress slowed to near zero...

Another turnaround and that current carried me swiftly back to the takeout.

Some additional trash of a mostly plastic nature was recovered while on this second paddle...
