Merrimack Fallback Launch

The plan was to get out on the Merrimack River in a spot somewhat sheltered from the day's predicted southwest wind gusts.  Upon arriving at Southwell Park in North Chelmsford I found that the boat launch was closed and fenced-off.  Apparently the launch is being used exclusively by Mass DOT for activities related to a bridge construction project.  Thought about using the Rourke Bros. launch on the opposite side of the Merrimack but instead decided to drive further upriver to Riverfront Park in Tyngsborough where, after launching, I found some protection from the gusts (above photo).

Heading downstream brought me to the Tyngsborough Bridge where the building winds could be felt...
...and convinced me to turn about and head upriver where things were calmer...

Hugged the river's west shore just as the former Boston and Maine Railroad's New Hampshire Division did.  This old culvert beneath the tracks probably dates to the 1830s...

Wood ducks were seen...

Limit Brook enters the river from behind a sandy point of land...

Trash encountered along the way included 3 Mylar balloons...

The predicted wind gusts of up to 45 mph did cause problems in Lowell that day when hot ambers from a housefire spread to 5 other homes resulting in a 5-alarm fire.

Info found online concerning the bridge project indicates that the launch at Southwell Park may re-open sometime in June.  Hope so.
