An Assabet Second Look

Ended up paddling on the Assabet River twice this past week.  On Tuesday I'd noticed that the Assabet eagle nest was noticeably smaller and snapped a photo of the nest for comparison to recent photos of it.  When I later downloaded the photo at home it became apparent that in addition to being smaller there appeared to be a large motionless bird seemingly on its back in the nest...maybe an eagle's version of a Thanksgiving dinner.

To be sure the motionless bird wasn't one of the eaglets I decided to re-visit the nest on Thursday to check things out.

Getting back to the size reduction of the nest, here's how the nest looked on June 28th...

...compared to yesterday, July14th...

Happily both eaglets were present and accounted for four trees away from the nest...

Clearly they both can now fly.  I'm guessing the motionless bird on its back was an unfortunate Canada goose.

A closer look at one of the eaglets...

The Assabet's low water levels this past week allowed a peek of a cobalt blue bottle in the river bank...

...as well as this half-pint whiskey bottle...

Both were in relatively good shape considering how long they'd been in the mud...

The blue bottle had no embossing on the sides and only a circled "M" and an "I" or "1" on its base.

Trash from Tuesday...

Trash from yesterday...

...which included the first cans of "Cloud Candy" beer I've ever seen.  Liked the name of the manufacturer...Mighty Squirrel Brewing Company.

The Route 62 bridge at Gleasondale was sporting some new green steel beams...
