February Floats Away

Last night's big blow ushered in the month of March with a loud lion's roar, in sharp contrast to February's very calm and dignified exit just a day before.

Late on Sunday morning I'd slowly paddled down the the Concord River to near Davis Hill and watched as the month of February floated off to the northward.

On the way downriver I'd passed under the Old North Bridge which was momentarily free of pedestrians...
...as folks were otherwise seen out and about on seemingly every riverside trail.

Earlier I'd passed Egg Rock where the Assabet and Sudbury rivers join to form the Concord...

Ducks seen included mallards, woodies, and buffleheads.  Plenty of bluebirds, robins, wrens, and small woodpeckers.  A mink swam by (too fast for me to focus)...

...before jumping out and racing across the snow...

It was good to see other kayakers out on the river as well.

The melting ice and snow released a little more trash...

Note the smaller-sized bottle of Corona beer aptly named "Coronita"...perhaps an omen of a soon-to-be diminished virus?

Being an eternal optimist I recently opened a dusty folder containing plans I'd put together a year ago for a paddling/camping trip to the woods and waters of Maine.  Those plans, like those of so many other folks, got quashed due to 2020 COVID-related travel restrictions.  Perhaps this spring, thanks to the vaccination program now underway, such a trip might actually be possible.  At any rate, after looking through the maps and first-hand accounts in the folder, it didn't take long for my hopes to be rekindled.
