Pompositticut Daybreak

I kicked myself out of bed at 4 am, was on the Assabet River in Stow by 5:30, and thereby able to personally greet July's arrival.  Launching at Magazu's Landing on Sudbury Road allowed me to paddle through the region once known as Pompositticut (its Native American name) prior to 1683.
My route took me upriver to Gleasondale, then back downriver to Crow Island with a short detour into Fort Meadow Brook up to the old RR trestle.

The breaking day found some early birds already fishing ...

The river looked serene...

...and nicely backlit...

Several young wood ducks still not able to get airborne looked for a place to hide...

In Fort Meadow Brook a grass whip may soon replace my paddle...

New blossoms were evident...

This belted kingfisher stayed in one place long enough for a photo...

A green heron partially eluded me...

Mute swans around Crow Island are seeing a growth spurt...

Thanks to my early start I was back at the landing by 9 am...

Today's trash haul was small and not very fresh...
Only 8 recyclable containers (5 redeemable) and 10 pieces of miscellaneous rubbish.  YTD = 3149

Hopefully July will hang around for as long as its seasonal opposite, January, did.
